Plastic has contaminated the ocean year after year, about 8 million tons are dumped into the oceans every year.
Experts say if we do not act now, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
And products such as straw, apparently innocuous, has helped to make things worse. In the United States alone, 500 million plastic straws are used per day. That's right: PER DAY! And like other waste, they end up in the sea, being swallowed by marine animals, which die suffocated with plastic parts.
Replacing plastic with products made from rice, for example, eliminates this problem. It dissolves within 100 days!
The plastic straw represents 4% of all the plastic waste in the world, and because it is made of polypropylene and polystyrene (plastics), it is not biodegradable and can take up to a thousand years to decompose in the environment!
The production of plastic straw contributes to the consumption of oil, a non-renewable source; and its use time is very short - about four minutes. But what is four minutes to us equals hundreds of years of pollution to the environment.
If we stack the straws consumed by the Brazilians in a year on a wall of 2.10 meters high, it would be possible to circulate the Earth completely, in a line of more than 45,000 kilometers wide!
